Salt and Light

This collection includes the life stories of outstanding Chinese Christians who, as early modernizers, promoted China's nation building and moral progress in the early twentieth century.

These stories are shorter adaptations from the book, Salt and Light: Lives of Faith That Shaped Modern China, edited by Carol Lee Hamrin with Stacey Bieler.

Mei Yiqi

1889 — 1962

Mei became president of Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1931. During the difficult years of the Anti-Japanese War, he was president of Southwest United University (a consortium of China's best universities) in Kunming, Yunnan.

Rong Hong

1828 — 1912

Rong was the first "returned student" from America and founder of the Chinese Educational Mission. He paved the way for the first hundred Chinese to receive a state-sponsored modern education, and as a diplomat helped to stop the international coolie trade.

Stone Mary

1873 — 1954

Shi was among the first Chinese women graduates from a U.S. medical school. On return to China, she founded a hospital and developed the nursing profession.

Tang Guo'an

1858 — 1913

Pioneer in modern education; early diplomat

Wei Zhuomin

1888 — 1976

Wei served as president of Huazhong (Central China) University in Wuhan from 1929 to 1952. A philosopher with a profound knowledge of Chinese culture, Wei was an early exponent of "world Christianity."

Wu Yifang

1893 — 1985

Wu became China's first woman university president, at Jinling Women's College in Nanjing. Wu was the only woman in China's delegation at the founding of the United Nations.

Yan Yangchu

1893 — 1990

Yan, a Yale graduate who pioneered urban literacy training through the Mass Education Movement, also began a rural reconstruction model program and college.
