安德森出生在一个基督徒家庭，其家庭成员中包括安立甘宗、长老宗、弟兄会和贵格会的信徒。早在慕迪（Dwight Lyman Moody）来访前十多年，安德森的信仰就已逐步坚定了。1896年，他听到穆德（John R. Mott）的证道，一年后明确了自己的蒙召，立志从事海外宣教和教导工作。他先后到伦敦、威斯敏斯特学院（Westminster College）和剑桥（Cambridge）等地接受训练，并于1902年被按立为牧师。1904年，安德森在泉州和厦门开始办学，且终生不缀。他把自己所创办的学校取名为威斯敏斯特。
1931年，安德森被调往新加坡办学，为建校他四处奔波劝募，特别向那些分散在东南亚地区的泉州毕业校友募捐。1941年夏天，65岁的安德森到南非休假。由于日军入侵，他留在非洲为中国募集资金。但当他试图取道印度回中国时，却未能成功。1946年，安德森返回新加坡，先后在Katong和Muar安度晚年。安德森终生未婚。他生活极为敬虔，富有幽默感，而且有向个人传福音的恩赐。他有点像诗人，搜集一些格言谜语，用来和年轻人展开对话。他在宣教方面具有强烈的战略意识，甚至不惜花费自己的资金为教会的发展而购置土地。
